Horse Boarding

Shannon Beaty

I have been around horses since I was 7 years old. My first horse was a beautiful gray Arab gelding named Fuego del Oro. I got involved in the show world with him. I never accepted the way in which these beautiful animals were treated then or now. I stopped showing about 20 years ago.

My love for horses has been a never ending cycle of learning. My journey into natural horsemanship began when I fell in love with a horse that was 'way over' my head, a hot little 2 1/2 year old Arabian gelding. A friend of mine told me she had experience in starting horses, so I let her help me. But she had no clue about how to gently and properly start a young horse. She put all the 'gear' on him; tie down, draw reins, bridle, saddle..........it was like going to war with this poor horse. Any way, he threw her off and tore his mouth ½ inch on both sides. From then on no one could get near his sides, he registered the pain in his mouth from someone trying to get on him. I went through many tears and three different trainers telling me to sell him, get rid of him, he’s ruined and he’ll probably kill someone. I searched for answers. There was a horseman at the ranch where I kept my horse. He had been watching all this stuff happening with me and my horse, he asked if I would be interested in learning a thing or two about true horsemanship. I was very interested, he told me about Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt, Buck Brennaman and many more great horsemen. From there, I began my own study of horsemanship. I learn something new every day from the horses I’m blessed with and the ones my students own. Horses are my passion. I've learned many teaching techniques from the many horseman I have studied. Ray Hunt is one of my favorites. I like the Pat Parelli 7 games to teach students and their horses the basics of foundation training. I feel it’s the easiest to follow in the beginning. Once you have a feel for your horse, we move on. I feel each horse is different some techniques work better then others on a particular horse. I like to teach people to feel when a certain method is working and when it's not. I do all my teaching with a gentle touch, and always respect the horse, feel timing and love are crucial in any part of teaching.
